You can update a team name in Pacer for Teams, but who can change it and when depends on how your organization configured teams.
In most Pacer for Teams setups:
- Team Captains can edit the team name before a challenge starts.
- Once a challenge is in progress, team changes are often restricted to Admins (some orgs lock team edits during the challenge period).
Before you start
Confirm 2 things
Are you the Team Captain?
If you created the team, you’re typically the captain and may be able to edit the team name (especially before the challenge begins).
Has the challenge already started?
Many organizations restrict team changes once the challenge is live, and require an Admin to make updates.
Option 1: Update the team name as a Team Captain (in the app)
Best for: Changing the team name before the challenge starts.
Note: Exact button labels can vary by app version and how your org set up teams.
- Open Pacer (the Pacer for Teams participant app).
- Enter your organization space (the private org where your challenge lives).
- Select the ...(More) button and choose My Info
- Select My Team to access your team
- Tap Manage / Edit Team (or a gear/⋯ menu).
- Update Team Name → Save/Confirm.
If you don’t see an Edit option
That usually means one of these is true:
- The challenge has already started and the org locked edits (Admin-only changes during the challenge are common).
- You are not the Team Captain.
- Your teams were pre-created by Admins and participants cannot rename them.
If any of the above applies, use Option 2.
Option 2: Request an Org Admin to update the team name (Admin Portal)
Best for: Changes during an active challenge, or when participant editing is disabled.
Pacer for Teams provides a web-based Admin Portal where Admins manage teams and the overall challenge organization.
What the Admin should do (high-level steps)
- Sign in to the Pacer for Teams Admin Portal.
- Go to Teams / Team Management (sometimes under participant management).
- Find your team.
- Select Edit (or open team details).
- Update the Team Name.
- Save changes.
What you should send to the Admin (copy/paste)
- Organization name (and Org Code if you have it)
- Current team name
- New team name you want
- Your role (Team Captain / member)
- Whether the challenge is already live
This reduces back-and-forth and avoids renaming the wrong team.
What happens after renaming?
Typically:
- The team name updates on the leaderboard and team list.
- Team membership and progress usually remain the same (renaming is a label change), but some orgs may have rules (e.g., locking changes after start).
Troubleshooting
“I renamed it, but others still see the old name”
- Ask teammates to refresh the challenge page (or fully close/reopen the app).
- Wait a few minutes for syncing if your org is large.
“We need to rename during the challenge”
- In many orgs, only Admins can make changes during the challenge period.
