For wearable step syncing, the device's app needs permission to write Steps to Health Connect, and Pacer needs permission to read them.
In the current Pacer Android connection, Steps read access is required. Additional permissions enable other supported features:
| Pacer permission | What it enables |
|---|---|
| Read Steps | Import step totals |
| Read Distance | Use available distance records |
| Read Exercise | Import supported workout sessions |
| Write Steps, Distance, and Exercise | Share eligible Pacer-recorded activity |
| Read in the background, when available | Access Health Connect while Pacer is not visible |
You do not need to grant medical-record access to sync steps.
Restore or change permissions
- Search your phone's Settings for Health Connect.
- Open App permissions or the list of connected health apps, then select Pacer.
- Enable Steps under read access. Review and enable the other categories you want Pacer to use.
- Check your wearable's companion app separately and enable Steps under write access.
- Reopen the companion app to sync your wearable, then return to Pacer and retry.
If the permission list separates fitness data from additional access, review the relevant sections. Android wording varies by version. Google's permission guide explains these controls.
Why didn't a permission screen appear?
You may already have granted access, or the app may direct you to Health Connect settings to review an earlier decision. Open the settings above to inspect the current permissions.
Android permissions such as Physical activity and Nearby devices serve different purposes. They do not, by themselves, grant Pacer access to another app's Health Connect records.
What happens if I turn off access?
Without Steps read access, Pacer cannot continue reading Health Connect steps. Its connection may show Needs access.
Revoking access does not itself delete previously stored Health Connect data. If you want Pacer to use your phone instead, follow Switch back to Phone.
If you allow foreground access but not background reading, open Pacer to refresh. Background permission does not guarantee instant updates from the wearable.
